What does this guide do?
This guide shows you how to install a stand-alone copy of TF2 and then patch it back to an older version.
In other words, it lets you watch old demos.

Which old demos work?
Any demos between 19 August 2008 - 16 February 2009, provided you have the right version of the map used in the demo.

How much space does this take up?
The TF2 folder is only 235mb.

How big is the patch I have to download?
35mb.

The game doesn't load when I run the shortcut.
Close steam.

I get the error "Unable to load gcfprep.dll" when loading GCF Prep.
Check that you have these installed.
Microsoft .NET framework 2.0 or greater. [LINK]
Microsoft Visual C++ 2008 Redistributable Package. [LINK]

Download Guide:
http://www.mithun.org/solus/tf2_demos_easymethod.pdf
Why PDF? Because I would probably end up deleting the images or something if they were on my ftp.

Any feedback would be great. If something isn't clear or you're having trouble getting this to work, pm me on irc. I can be found in #dogz @ irc.gamesurge.net

Nice one Solus

His backed up GCF files cover 19 August 2008 - 28 January 2009

Hopefully the backup I have at home covers 28th january 2009 -> 16th February 2009, so I may be able to make a rollback patch for this time period as well. Will check it out tonight.

The rollback patch for that time period would replace mine completely. Meaning it would play anything mine currently plays + 3 weeks extra up till 16th Feb 09.

That'd be great

It gets really hard to make rollback patches for the game that far back - Too much has changed since and the patch would probably be close to 200mb (400mb if I included the maps needed).

So i guess youll be releasing patches everytime a demo breaking update is brought out by valve?

Also, if you did release patches to keep the demo's viewable, wouldnt the patch rewrite the older patches like it does with upates, or will we have to have to have different copy's of tf2 for different time periods?

Edit:

Fucking awesome thing youve done, thanks alot. How the hell did you learn to do this?

Yes - the rollbacks will simulate an update in this case (it will replace/change/add files made in that update)

You'll be able to extract separate rollback patches to newly created standalone installs - so you could name one TF2 folder with Solus' rollback patch "TF2 - 19aug08 to 28jan09" and create a new directory called "TF2 - 29jan09 to 16feb09" and apply a new rollback to this directory. (Just an example)

As long as someone keeps backing the GCF files up, theres no need to rely on Valve to amend demo playback anymore using this method.

Doesn't seem too bad when 2 minute frag vids come out these days at 100+mb.

Oh and great work Solus; thanks!

A lot of trial and error and improving on this method http://etf2l.org/forum/movie/topic-1820/?recent=26351 (courtesy of haxxorized for linking that euro thread).

Except that valve should have built in backwards compatibility. Or at least made it easier to deal with changes.

I guess its not worth the time they'd have to spend on it.

Well done regardless, Solus!

In Valve's defense, ever since they said they would do their best to prevent demo's from breaking, they went from AUGUST last year up until February this year. That's a huge time period to have demos not breaking, considering how fast they used to break.

I don't know anyone that has backed up GCF's between that time period :S
Doubt I can get that time period working. Atleast not until I can find someone who has those GCFs.
