I've never really understood the cl_updaterate, cl_cmdrate and cl_rate commands so can anyone explain these for me?

My current settings are cl_updaterate 45, cl_cmdrate 50, cl_rate 1000 which I've had since 2001 when I was on Paradise 128k. However, have since changed ISP's a couple of times and have recently returned back to Paradise but through their Telstraclear cable network (2mbit plan).

My ping is fine to every Aussie server (50-80ms) apart from the MCGOOHQ servers but have experienced a bit of choke at times, especially when there's a bit happening on the screen on GameArena for instance.

I may need to make some adjustments now that I frequent aussie servers. Any help please?

Ta nug, BUT there isn't anything majorly wrong with my "crappy kiwi connection" so those settings won't help me. I just want a little explanation as to what those commands do so I can 'fine tune' the settings I have for a cable connection on aussie servers.

As they are atm, they're playable but I just wouldn't mind having them set as accurately as possible.

All-rounder
rate How fast (in Bytes) you download data from the server.
(~20000 does the trick and is basically needed if you run up/cmd rates of 100ish and is controlled by the servers sv_maxrate which is hopefully 20000ish)

cl_updaterate How many times per second the server tries to update your computer.
(same as your fps but is also controlled by the servers sv_maxupdaterate which is hopefully 100ish)

cl_cmdrate How many times per second your computer tries to update the server.
(supposed to be set to servers fps but that's kinda impossible to tell so set it to your fps but no real benefit above 100)

cl_rate How fast (in Bytes) you upload data to the server.
(Pretty much does nothing tbh, may as well leave it at default of 9999)

cl_cmdbackup is the number of backup packets that are sent.
(default 2 tbh)

cl_resend is the number of times a packet will try to be sent.
(default 6 tbh. Increasing it may or may not help with rego)

"LAN/T1 > 1M" rates are like 20000/100/100, which is why most people use them cos their connections can handle them and there's no benefit going any higher.
