~ Even Ubers, player disadvantage = Uber with just the pocket, make them multi, aim for kills.
~ Uber advantage, player advantage = slow push their team out.

etc (no idea if the above are correct - just using them as an example of what I'm after)

I understand that there are many variables that affect what should be done, eg. positioning, health, ammo, player skill, etc but having a very general guide to base our plays off would be fantastic.

Thanks.

You really should be thinking about it like this, a simple 1 dimensional scale.

Things that affect advantage and what to do with it.

1. Players (in rough importance order)
a. Who has more players alive (damage dealing)?
b. Is our/their medics alive?
c. Other key player compositions missing (no scouts)
d. Respawn wave (especially in A/D maps)

Having medic advantage is only realized with time, as it it converted into actual health advantage.

corollaries:
1*. Damage: When we talk about player advantage really what we mean is each team's damage output and combined health. Knowing whos alive is just the easiest shortcut way to add this. Thus having fragging players alive is only useful if they can actually do something, and realised damage is often just as good as kills. If your demoman announces he just did 'a shitload of damage' then be aggressive.
1**. ammo: Another significant advantage, however much harder to monitor. Players without ammo loaded simply cant do damage.

2. Uber
- Uber advantage does mean 2 different things. When a medic says "we have 50% uber advantage" he means he has 50% more uber than his enemy medic. Obviously this is worth nothing when he has 65% vs 15%, its only a realized advantage when he reaches 100%. And this advantage will only last for a <20 second window.
- uber vs no uber is an advantage probably worth ~1.5 players, but can range from 0-2.5 depending on the terrain (better in closed or linear areas (or last point pushes, worse in open ones or divergent paths (where scattering and retreat is easy))
- uber is alot more than just advantage and understanding how to correctly use and play with uber is important, not just for the medic and primary soldier, but for all team members.

3. Terrain/Positioning
Every situation is different. Some points have defenders terrain advantage worth upward of 1+ players (eg pushing snakewater/freight last 6v5 is often not enough). Many map designs even give the attackers a strong advantage if used correctly, however more experienced teams will try to avoid holding in such an area if possible.

anyway there are some really good general rules like

you never want to uber first with player advantage

Uber advantage, even players = multiuber is really good with uber advantage

Even Ubers, player disadvantage = This is the situation when you can potentially use an aggressive uber to buy time for respawners. example may be defending granary warehouse, you have lost rollout and your soldier + medic are retreating. You will use an aggressive uber by supprising them and making them pop uber then falling back onto your respawning demoman

Uber advantage, player advantage = depends how much player advantage you have and how much uber advantage you have. Maybe use the uber if you can get alot of kills. If they defend passively (because they have uber disadvantage) maybe you can take the point for free

The bolded things are like maxims they are gold
