LAN-slide v12.0

LAN-slide will be holding our next LAN party on July 4th-5th!

We return to the Aspendale Gardens Community Centre, this time for a full 24 hours of gaming from 10am. The venue is just 40 mins South-East of the CBD.

Register now

Update: comp posters!
About us

LAN-slide is South East Melbourne’s largest BYO-PC LAN Party, and have recently expanded capacity for up 220 players. All individuals and teams are welcome to attend LAN-slide (casual, competitive, and everything in-between). LAN-slide runs quarterly, and aims to maintain a positive atmosphere and strong community. Network cables provided.

We have several team comps (with serious prizes!), plus a number of individual comps (also with prizes!)

Come for the games, stay for the community =)

Comps

Full schedule

Team
  • Dota 2
  • CS:GO
  • Team Fortress 2
  • Smite
Prizes will be announced closer to the event once we finalise details with our sponsors PLE Computers, SteelSeries, Plantronics, and Gigabyte. For now, you can view our posters from last event, v11.0, for an idea of what to expect.

If you've come to LAN-slide before, you'll probably notice that we have replaced the League of Legends comp with TF2. Due to League being messed around by internet and routing issues at our last two events, we will be waiting until we can guarantee good performance before we restore it as an official comp.

Individual: PC
  • Hearthstone
  • Age of Empires II HD
  • Quake III CPMA
  • Armagetron
  • Ultra Street Fighter IV
  • CS:GO Arms Race
  • FlatOut 2
  • Screencheat
Individual: console
  • Super Smash Bros (Wii U)
  • FIFA 15 (PS4)
  • Dance Dance Revolution
  • Guitar Hero (Xbox 360)
Individual: AFK
  • Pass the Parcel
  • Skulling Contest
  • Cards Against Humanity
Food, drink, and raffle

A shopping centre with plenty of food options is right next door for your convenience. We'll also be running a 'dollar shop', selling raffle tickets, soft drink cans, and water bottles.

Raffle loot will be announced on the day, but expect great prizes and lots of winners.

Toilets

Yep, supplied and kept clean!

TL;DR
  • Date: Saturday July 4th 10am -- July 5th 10am
  • Location: Aspendale Gardens Community Centre, 103 Kearney Drive, Aspendale Gardens, VIC
  • Player limit: 220
  • Cost: $25 per person, cash
  • Registration: See below
Event registration

1. Go to our website and log in with a Facebook or LAN-slide account
2. Open the event registrations page
3. Click the 'Join' button (above the registrations list in the 'Next Event' box)

Positions are limited; players registered on the website will be given priority.

Free tickets

Thinking about upgrading your rig? Simply spend $200 at our generous sponsors PLE Computers -- enter the coupon `LANSLIDETIX` during checkout to receive a free ticket to LAN-slide v12.0! With free shipping, you'd be crazy to pass this up. It also means you don't have to bring as much cash.

A week after respawn? Good luck... I'm not sure if you've checked our front page recently.

It's awesome that you guys are interested in supporting tf2 but the timing is a little unfortunate. Never know though!

I did see the Respawn thread, but there's only so many weekends in the school holidays! We're unfortunately overlapping with Switch LAN, and we'll be at GigaLAN the week after in Werribee.

ultiduo might be a good format for the official tournament here, unless there is a turnout enough for a 6v6 competition.

People can play pugs outside of the tournament if you get 12+ people.

I'm told the tournament format might depend on the prizes supplied by our sponsors. We'll do an announcement once everything's worked out and we have prize posters up.

@Paymh: We put up a poll on our Facebook Group and the majority of people wanted it 5v5. We understand this is unconventional for competitive TF2, however it's what the community wanted. A lot of our players will be casual TF2 players and probably find it hard finding enough players for a 6v6 or 9v9. We could have added 4v4 to the poll, but I feel the results would be the same.

I hope your community enjoys 5v5 goldrush lmao
Just keep in mind that if you actually want a decent turnout for the tf2 section in the future that you need to have not stupid rules, playercounts and maps

edit: glad to see you're taking advice

@nope: What stupid rules have we got? Our ruleset is based on the OWL ruleset (it is a little out of date, which will be updated before the event).
The player count was purely from poll results from OUR community.
As above, maps is determined by the OWL ruleset.

We're happy to take feedback, but we do ask you keep it constructive.

The issue is that the rules you're using are based around balancing 6v6 gameplay, but the tournament is 5v5.

As someone who participated in arena respawn for a couple months (5v5, no weapon bans, 1 of each class per team) You will not have a decent competitive environment in 5v5 on any maps that are not koth. Using payload and 5cp maps ASWELL as a class limit system that is balanced for 6v6 is really not a good idea.

I'd suggest either changing your tournament to 6v6 and using the OWL13 mapset and rules, or changing to a UGC 4v4 format with either 4v4 or 5v5 teams.

Thanks guys, that makes sense. In hindsight, should have added 4v4 as an option on the poll.
Probably in our case, it would make sense to try your second solution of using UGC 4v4 and play with 5v5 teams.

I think it's been stated that 5v5 is probably not going to work with just a copy pasted ruleset for 6v6 comp. Also, these rules kind of assume that people know what they are doing already, so even a 6v6 comp would be pretty shitty if the people turning up just want to play a casual TF2 comp. I'm assuming that they chose 5v5 because nearly every single other team game on the planet uses a 5v5 setup and they don't really know any better. Realistically anything less than a 6v6 feels really empty, even if it is only one less player.

We don't even use a copy paste of OWL rules for lan competitions, it simply takes too long to complete a match which is not what you want.

I'd probably just use arena 5v5 which is included in the game. It operates pretty similar to CS:GO so people will easily grasp it, and honestly it's some good quick fun. Round based, so just run it first to 4-5 rounds won or more depending on how long you want the matches to go for (can be kept track of by the engine itself).

If you want some help developing a ruleset/whitelist/classlimit layout for the competition, I'm happy to set aside some time in the week leading up to your lan.

EDIT: 4v4 has a lot of weird rules (can't use certain classes at the same time) so I wouldn't recommend it as it can't be restricted by the engine. Also it's very specifically balanced around 4v4 play so it wouldn't solve your issues.

@Kenneth: Thanks for the detailed response Kenneth. I would like to take you up on your offer to help refine the ruleset before our event. I will be at respawn the weekend before, so it might be a good chance to catch up.

We've decided to do a 5v5 Arena.
My current config is here: http://pastebin.com/EZqN4uwM

Initially, it will be first to 16 round wins (similar to MR15 ruleset for CS:GO).
I thought it would be better for it not to change map once the winlimit is reached.

Anything I've missed?

Gunblade is too cool for Arena 5v5 so thus far it is Lock, Oxy, myself and possibly Dreams. Looking for 1/2 more to come and win a free headset.

edit: If you are on the eastern side of Melbourne, I can probably provide a lift to one more person.

Disable crit/weapon spread at the very least.
Lock: It's being balanced for pub players, not for comp, a lot of stuff can probably be cut without anyone noticing.
Nuke: Quick warning, if you have over 5 servers you will find that your new servers will not show in the server browser, if this is the case make sure to use -ip and -port in the launch option (message me on Facebook if this comes up and you find yourself needing help)

We use virtual IPs to ensure every server is running on a unique IP.
Thanks for the tip though.

Edit:

Added:
tf_weapon_criticals 0
tf_damage_disablespread 1

understandable, but I still want the comp to be fun, and for the general public to not think tf2 is a game of gimmicks with randcrits, 30 engies, etc.

i chucked a few extra commands in this pastebin that would be nice to have, quickly explained what they did
