Hi guys,

I have a few questions about the 2 TFC servers on ozfortress's heavy box.

Valve sent out an email about a week ago about a coming update coming to TF2. You can find a copy of the email here. In short, it warns of potential breaks to servers on certain older operating systems. With heavy running on Ubuntu 12.04 (which is extremely outdated security wise), it is pretty much guaranteed.

With this update, we would like to update the heavy box to Ubuntu 16.04 (latest Ubuntu LTS) but in the process, everything on it will go down, including the TFC servers. Since both our developer and I have no experience with TFC, I want to ask a few questions and also talk with somebody who manages the TFC servers (Seraphim?).

Do the servers have a permanent password and rcon?
How often are the servers used? spoon said they're used everyday?
Are the servers self contained (i.e. don't depend on anything and nothing depends on it)?
Is the folder that the TFC server is in all that is needed?

When we do upgrade we hope to do it within the day.

Sorry to notify you of this and involve you all with this upgrade.

Cheers

Ask sera for details - they are used daily (simultaneously on match nights)

This is a client-side command (voice_scale). Nothing server configuration wise has been changed for TFC

I would say this would have to do with Valve using the Steam voice codec rather than a server based one.

I had sv_voicecodec voice_speex and sv_voicequality 5 (best) in the configuration and both of these commands no longer work - they were removed in a patch in 2013. This is apparently now set through steam settings -> voice.

Hope that helps

Always a pleasure my dude!

I noticed performance was a bit flakey post-upgrade so I've put a 1000Hz kernel on the server and switched the clocksource from tsc to hpet. I'd love to know how the servers feel performance wise. These changes don't benefit TF2 as much as TFC, due to TFC being able to utilise a tickrate of 1000.

So should we be putting our rates up or something if it's faster now?

Should be using rate 100000 and cl_cmdrate/cl_updaterate 102 if you already aren't. The server has accepted these rates from clients for a while now, most modern connections should handle it

(edit: use 102 - for some reason this sends a lot more data to and from the server!)
