so today I dropped my iPod touch 4g (bought at Christmas 2011) and screen smashed instantly. First time I've dropped it and yeah. What is the best thing to do? contact apple or find a replacement screen? I don't really want to buy a new one.

phone repair shops in shopping centres can look after it for you while you wait (probably cost you $100-$150)

afaik all apple products have 1 year warranty unless you buy an extra year, so contacting apple won't really help you out any differently than a standard phone repair shop. best bet is to follow merks advice

It depends, some Apple stores are generous and will outright replace it. I wouldn't rely on that though.

I replaced the screen on my old iPhone twice. Got a screen from eBay cost $15 and about 5 minutes of my time
